We’ve already seen how eating right (veggies over processed foods) helps with eye health. Exercise increases circulation, which can lower pressure within the eyes, which helps with those who have glaucoma. Getting regular overall physicals may lead to early detection of diseases like diabetes or other systemic conditions that can lead to eye problems. And most important, if something bothers you or feels wrong, get it checked out.

Contacts lenses are a great tool, but they come with responsibility Be sure to have a pair of glasses with a recent prescription so that if you get any irritation you can change over. Not taking good care of your contacts can turn simple problem (irritation) into a significant problem (a corneal ulcer). Make sure you care for the lenses properly.  Make sure your solutions aren’t expired, keep your contacts fresh and clean.

Have you ever wonder why your eyes are dry? As we age, we experience more dry eye symptoms. “The biggest reason people have dry eyes is that the tear film doesn’t have the right consistency of water, mucus and oil,” says Dr. Mogk. The oil part of your tears comes from little glands at the margin of your eyelids. As you blink, oil is supposed to coat the eyes. But if this coating is insufficient, the tear film evaporates and eyes feel dry. This triggers reflex tearing, which is why your eyes water when they get dry and irritated. Omega-3 (fish for example) helps with this. Also, heat and air conditioning can cause dry eyes, especially if you sit near a vent or fan unit. Make sure that the vent in your car isn’t blowing toward your face.

These days we find that more and more young adults are wearing glasses, the cause of such can range anywhere from a biological to an environmental perspective, such as overexposure to artificial light etc, however, its never too late for proper eye care

Early detection is better to know now than later. Did you know that your eye doctor can see signs of diabetes, high cholesterol, check you eye pressure to see if you are a suspect of glaucoma and other diseases during your eye exam? Find out now…

Amblyopia is a decrease vision in one eye that has not received sufficient use during childhood.  It is also referred to as “Lazy Eye”. Most often it results from misalignment of the child’s eye such as crossed eyes or difference in seeing from both eyes. In this case one eye is focusing more than the other. Usually if this situation persists, the weaker eye becomes inadequate.

Wondering What Can Be Done?

With early detection, the eye can be restored either by prescribed glasses to improve the vision in the “lazy eye.” In fact, surgery may be done on the eye muscle to straighten the eye if other non- surgical procedure are unsuccessful.  Eye exercises may also be carried out before or after the surgery has been done.

There are many clues for parents to identify that their child or they themselves can see possible vision problems. Here are some examples you should ask yourself or see if your child does any of these.

Do you or your child sit very close to the TV?

Avoid activities for no reasonable explanation?

At times get headaches or tired eyes?

Dislike bright light?

Rub their eyes regularly?

Squint in their classrooms or tilt their head to see?

If you notice any of these signs or see yourself in this situation, the best word of advice is to visit an eye doctor. People who wear eyeglasses should see their doctors at least once a year. Parents must see to it that their children wear their glasses. Through the use of glasses, a  child’s vision can dramatically improve greatly if the child wears glasses as directed.

Glaucoma is another type of eye disorder often related with a dangerous buildup of internal eye pressure which can damage the eye’s optic nerve that send out visual information to your brain. When left untreated it can lead to blindness. You might eventually notice decreased ability to see at the edges of your vision (peripheral vision). Glaucoma is the thief of sight. Get screened today.

Symptoms

Glaucoma often is called the “silent thief of sight,” because most types typically cause no pain and produce no symptoms until noticeable vision loss occurs. For this reason, glaucoma often progresses undetected until the optic nerve already has been irreversibly damaged, with varying degrees of permanent vision loss. Astigmatism is the most common vision problem. Astigmatism occurs when the cornea is shaped more like a football rather than a baseball, which is the normal shape. Astigmatism can affect a child’s ability to see well in school which is why it’s important that eye exams be scheduled at regular intervals to detect any astigmatism early on. With uncorrected astigmatism, you may experience headaches or eye strain and distort or blur your vision at all distances.
