Amblyopia is a decrease vision in one eye that has not received sufficient use during childhood. It is also referred to as “Lazy Eye”. Most often it results from misalignment of the child’s eye such as crossed eyes or difference in seeing from both eyes. In this case one eye is focusing more than the other. Usually if this situation persists, the weaker eye becomes inadequate.
Wondering What Can Be Done?
With early detection, the eye can be restored either by prescribed glasses to improve the vision in the “lazy eye.” In fact, surgery may be done on the eye muscle to straighten the eye if other non- surgical procedure are unsuccessful. Eye exercises may also be carried out before or after the surgery has been done.
There are many clues for parents to identify that their child or they themselves can see possible vision problems. Here are some examples you should ask yourself or see if your child does any of these.
Do you or your child sit very close to the TV?
Avoid activities for no reasonable explanation?
At times get headaches or tired eyes?
Dislike bright light?
Rub their eyes regularly?
Squint in their classrooms or tilt their head to see?
If you notice any of these signs or see yourself in this situation, the best word of advice is to visit an eye doctor. People who wear eyeglasses should see their doctors at least once a year. Parents must see to it that their children wear their glasses. Through the use of glasses, a child’s vision can dramatically improve greatly if the child wears glasses as directed.
Glaucoma is another type of eye disorder often related with a dangerous buildup of internal eye pressure which can damage the eye’s optic nerve that send out visual information to your brain. When left untreated it can lead to blindness. You might eventually notice decreased ability to see at the edges of your vision (peripheral vision). Glaucoma is the thief of sight. Get screened today.
Symptoms
Glaucoma often is called the “silent thief of sight,” because most types typically cause no pain and produce no symptoms until noticeable vision loss occurs. For this reason, glaucoma often progresses undetected until the optic nerve already has been irreversibly damaged, with varying degrees of permanent vision loss. Astigmatism is the most common vision problem. Astigmatism occurs when the cornea is shaped more like a football rather than a baseball, which is the normal shape. Astigmatism can affect a child’s ability to see well in school which is why it’s important that eye exams be scheduled at regular intervals to detect any astigmatism early on. With uncorrected astigmatism, you may experience headaches or eye strain and distort or blur your vision at all distances.
Diabetic eye disease refers to a group of eye problems that people with diabetes may face as a complication of this disease. Diabetic eye disease may include: Diabetic retinopathy which damages the blood vessels in the retina. Cataract is the clouding of the eye’s lens and glaucoma increases in fluid pressure inside the eye that leads to optic nerve damage.
Did you know not being careful with wearing contact lenses can damage your eyes? You can have some abrasions on the cornea and inflammation on the surface of your eyes. Don’t wear lenses that are not prescribed, their very risky. You should always clean them daily and make sure you don’t wear them to bed.
Never be terrified to ask an eye doctor whatever questions you have about vision problems. Make sure you follow their instructions. Learn to recognize signs of trouble that can alert you to serious problems such as red or painful eyes, sudden changes in vision and irritation of the eye.
Eye floaters are tiny spots and specks that moves aimlessly around in your field of vision. While restless, eye floaters and spots are very common and usually aren’t cause for alarm.
Floaters generally appear when tiny pieces of the eye’s gel-like vitreous break loose within the inner back part of the eye. Some eye care professional use lasers to remove the floaters but not entirely.
