HISTORY

Lucent Vision® was founded by Light Amedzekor. A visionary and social entrepreneur after watching his mother Victoria  suffer from serious eye problem at an early age. Mr. Amedzekor’s mother had several eye surgeries but later had a decrease vision in her left sight due to complications. This was what had an impact on Light.

At an early age, Light  developed a love of helping others and was devoted to his education because he knew where he came from and remembered how impoverished his family was, as education in Ghana was not free. At college, he was involved in extracurricular activities that had nothing to do with his academic work. He was the first African- American student government president, who committed to change how things were running at school and served as the editor -in- chief of the school newspaper.

Lucent Vision was founded on January 1st 2010 after his mom’s incidence.  “Besides my mom, I saw so many people who needed eye care and I contemplated on how do we get them educated and connected with an eye doctor to get the best eye care possible” says Light Amedzekor. With so much enthusiasm, and a loving heart, Mr. Amedzekor went on to volunteer at different medical institutions including  Lincoln Hospital at an eye clinic with Dr. Kiros who is an optometrist. He then went on to work with Dr.Barns and Carters family eyecare.  This was where Light created a blog  in the form of an awareness to educate the public about protecting their eyes by first watching what they eat and informing the public about the importance of getting a comprehensive eye exam because early detection is better.

Lucent Vision welcomes qualified ophthalmologists, optometrists, and other people who have the drive to help the organization to eliminate preventable blindness and improve the gift of sight. Beside school, work and volunteering, Light started a student organization and gathered groups of students  including local churches and public schools to discuss the importance of taking charge of their eye health to help eliminate blindness. He continued to established an outreach program called Eye See Now to help reach out to remote-less villages. “Eye See Now was establish after an old lady’s cataract that was removed and I feel like that’s a powerful message to help more people receive sight.  Says Light Amedzekor. With steps forward, many people began to volunteer and usually contributes at least 20 hours of volunteer service to help eliminate preventable blindness and restoring sight. Before they go through the process of volunteering, they get trained by an optometrist for several hours.

                               FACTS

Over 700 million people in America and worldwide are blind or visually impaired merely because they cannot afford the eyeglasses they need. Lucent Vision helps relieve the burden by creating a solution that lets people know the resources available.

Prevention of ocular diseases should begin at an early age in order to maintain a  healthy vision. Visiting eye care professionals for a checkup during preschool stage is very essential to avoid any kind of refractive errors, or other problem that may impair vision at a later stage of development. When diagnosed and treated with proper care at this stage, many diseases will be avoidable. Normally, children have to squint when constantly watching TV, reading or writing, etc. At this crucial point, it becomes very important to learn how to rest the eyes.

As Lucent vision offered not only an opportunity to” create empowerment” for everyone, but to help people all over the world get involved and take charge of their vision.

The solution is to raise an awareness of these resources such as American Academy of Ophthalmology, CHIP EyeCare America, and American Optometric Association. These organizations have available programs where optometrists and ophthalmologists provide free eye care for patients and it’s just a matter of people calling the 1800 number and get connected with an eye doctor for an appointment and then get the same quality eye care as everyone else . These programs are designed for people who do not have health insurance so they can get an eye exam.

Through the generous funds that we get from our donors, 100% is used for cataract surgeries, medications, glasses and so on to help someone see better.
